HUB OVEST AEROPORTO DI FIUMICINO
The Context
In 2013–2014, ADR Engineering commissioned the architectural expansion of the West Hub (Hub Ovest) at Leonardo da Vinci Fiumicino Airport in Rome. This project aimed to enhance the airside terminal (Avancorpo) and the new Pier F, addressing the growing demands of international air traffic and improving passenger experience. The expansion was part of a broader strategy to increase the airport’s capacity and modernize its infrastructure to accommodate future growth.
The project was developed in collaboration with Studio Muzi & Associati.
The Concept
The design focused on creating a seamless integration between functionality and aesthetics, ensuring efficient passenger flow while maintaining a high standard of comfort and design. The architectural approach emphasized transparency, openness, and modernity, aligning with the airport’s vision to provide a world-class travel experience. The use of natural light, spacious interiors, and clear signage aimed to enhance passenger orientation and comfort.
The Project
Architectural Design and Envelope
The project involved the development of the new airside terminal and Pier F, including the architectural envelope and interior design. The design aimed to create a cohesive and welcoming environment, with attention to detail in materials and spatial organization. The use of sustainable materials and energy-efficient systems was prioritized to align with modern environmental standards.
Interior Design
Interior spaces were designed to enhance passenger comfort and orientation, incorporating elements that reflect the cultural and architectural identity of Rome. The design aimed to create a sense of place, making the airport experience more engaging and memorable. Features such as comfortable seating areas, clear wayfinding, and aesthetically pleasing finishes contributed to a positive passenger experience.
