GREEN WORX | Vienna

The Context

Vienna is internationally renowned for its unique balance between urban development and green oases. In recent years, the district around the Prater park and Messe Wien exhibition centre has emerged as a thriving business hub. Its proximity to the historic city centre, outstanding public transport connections, and lush surroundings make the Lassallestraße area one of the most attractive business addresses in the city. Within this vibrant context, the GREEN WORX office complex plays a pioneering role, setting new standards for environmentally conscious architecture and sustainable workplace environments. The project was developed in collaboration with EGS Plan International.

The Concept

The design of GREEN WORX embodies the principles of sustainability, flexibility, and quality of life. Conceived as a multifunctional complex combining offices, retail, and hotel use, the project integrates green surroundings with efficient design solutions to create a healthy and productive environment. The four building volumes can be interconnected through glass bridges, offering adaptable configurations for both open-plan and cellular offices. Daylight-filled workspaces, inner courtyards, and rooftop terraces foster well-being, communication, and a strong relationship between interior spaces and the natural environment.

The Project

Sustainability and Climate Analysis

As the first project in Austria to achieve LEED Platinum certification, GREEN WORX stands as a landmark for sustainable building in Europe. Every element of the project was designed to minimize environmental impact and reduce operating costs. Advanced technologies such as concrete core activation regulate indoor temperatures, while waterless urinals and the exclusive use of renewable energy significantly lower the ecological footprint. The result is not only an environmentally friendly development but also exceptionally low operating costs—around €2.20 per sqm/month, including heating and cooling.

Interior Design and The Spaces

The interior spaces are designed for flexibility and adaptability. Tenants are free to configure layouts according to their needs, choosing between open-plan workspaces or private offices. Abundant natural light and tailored interior finishes create a bright and healthy working atmosphere. Generous terraces on the upper floors provide sweeping views of the city and surrounding landscapes, while landscaped courtyards between the buildings act as informal meeting points and areas for relaxation during breaks.

The Entrance Hall and Accessibility

The entrance to GREEN WORX reinforces the project’s identity as a modern, welcoming, and sustainable workplace. A carefully designed circulation system connects offices, retail units, and the adjoining 500-room hotel, providing seamless movement within the complex. The site benefits from excellent accessibility: two underground lines (U1 and U2), several suburban trains, bus and tram routes, and direct connections to the A23 motorway ensure fast and convenient links across Vienna. Cycling paths further enhance the sustainable mobility concept, connecting the project to both the city centre and the Danube Island.

The Roof and Bioclimatic Strategies

The roof design integrates energy efficiency with architectural quality. Terraces and planted outdoor areas extend the usable space while contributing to the bioclimatic performance of the buildings. Together with the “green lungs” of Vienna—the Prater and Danube Island—these design measures improve microclimatic conditions and strengthen the connection between built and natural environments.
