The Context

Enertopia is an experimental architectural project developed in collaboration with EGS Plan International. Its aim was to reinterpret key elements of traditional Arab architecture—the tent, the oasis, and the kasbah—and integrate them into a contemporary building prototype. The project combines cultural references, environmental strategies, and renewable energy technologies, envisioning a model for sustainable architecture in arid climates.

The Concept

The design is built around three symbolic and functional components:

  • The Tent: A canopy made of semi-transparent photovoltaic cells suspended on steel cables. This element provides both shade and electricity generation, embodying the dual role of shelter and energy source.
  • The Oasis: At the heart of the building lies a green courtyard with plants and water features, creating a natural cooling system through adiabatic cooling. Openings in the canopy allow wind to circulate beneath the structure, enhancing comfort and reducing the need for mechanical cooling.
  • The Kasbah: The external façade is conceived as a solid, massive wall with small rhomboidal openings, evoking the geometric language of traditional mashrabiya screens while ensuring privacy, shading, and protection from the harsh climate.

The Project

The building is organized with a fully glazed inner façade overlooking the oasis, shaded by the photovoltaic canopy. This creates a strong contrast with the outer façade, which is closed, massive, and protective. Together, these layers establish a balance between transparency and opacity, lightness and solidity, while rooting the project in cultural identity.

The roof canopy also functions as an active climatic shield. Through computational fluid dynamics simulations, the design team tested and optimized the photovoltaic pattern to minimize the risk of wind suction and ensure structural safety during desert windstorms.

Innovation and Sustainability

Enertopia demonstrates how traditional architectural wisdom can merge with contemporary technology to create resilient, energy-efficient, and culturally meaningful architecture. The project explores a future where renewable energy, passive cooling, and cultural identity coexist within a single architectural vision.
